Level 16 Overview: Dark Sea Placeholder Level

This level was apparently just a quick, thrown-together affair to show off the new Vortex Drones. There's one drone here and he can take you to Level 15. There's some Machine parts scattered around and that's about it. The exit on the right goes to a 3D stage.

The sky, surface of the water, and the background all appear to be the same as they are in the Dark Sea in the final version.
Look familiar? ;)

Here we see a Vortex drone, the type with unobstructed eyes and a less-armored body. Below him and Ecco, some finished rock and plant sprites. He's able to throw bubbles at you. They are clearly meant to damage you, but they don't.

If he grabs you, his sprite overlaps you instead of yours overlapping his. You also don't turn at an angle like you should. ... and he takes you to the "Vortex Future" level. A lot like the drones in Lunar Bay bringing you to the Vortex Future in the final version. Thanks a lot, jerk!

Let's explore this place a bit, shall we? Here's some Vortex machinery cleanly integrating into the rocks. Nicely drawn but I don't think this exact sprite made it into the final game anywhere. And here are some generic pipes sticking up from a rather awkwardly-selected location.

Here's a very weird right angle-shaped object. "I see that is from the Welcome to the Machine level in the first game. -- ED Annunziata, Producer And here's the tanklike cylindrical object from Welcome to the Machine in Ecco 1, as well. There are also quite a few of these in Level 15.

Here are some more Vortex towerlike objects, of a taller variety, sticking out of some final-looking rocks and plant growth. And here's a rather large mass of Vortex construction, including one of the holes that objects were thrown at Ecco from in Welcome to the Machine.

Finally, here's a Sonar map of the level. Note how the Vortex Drone shows up on it as he should, but as a yellow Hazard icon rather than the Vortex icon in the final game.
