Level 11 Overview: Prototype Moray Abyss
| |
This is a prototype version of the Moray Abyss. The snakes are quite a bit different, as are the walls.
There's no background, and the snakes attack differently. The scripted sequences occur in a different fashion,
with different animation. The Asterite globes just have placeholder text.

This level is the Moray Abyss, in prototype form. Here's Ecco and the giant conch
shell, with snakes swirling down at him. They can't hurt you. |
The snakes' sprites are basically identical, but their movement patterns do appear to be
slightly different. |
Surprise surprise! The snakes tethered to the walls are red instead of green,
sharing the sprites and color palette of the ones swirling downwards. |
Here's what they became in the final version. Smaller, new sprites, different
colors, and a little shorter. |
Like the final version, the shell drifts down to the bottom ... but it takes
its sweet time sinking into the ground before the snake pops out to attack. Unlike
the final version where it falls down and attacks very quickly. |
There are also fish in the final version that are not present in the prototype. Also note
the slightly different colors on the shell. |
The snake follows Ecco around in the shell like the final version. Charge-sonar his head
a bit and he dies. |
Also like the final version, the shell flies offscreen with some stars and releases 2 of
the Asterite's globes. |
But where they would have turned into their swirly pattern in the final
game, they just turn black here due to an apparent palette glitch. |
... and instead of "Find ... Globes" the Asterite says this to you. It's a message left over
from Ecco 1. No new message had been written, confirmed by a scan through the ROM binary for text
messages. |
Once you 'talk' to him, the opening in the right wall is now accessible, the scrolling is unlocked. So,
you can swim freely and head on through to the teleport ring which takes you to level 0, not even the
stage where you collect globes. How random. |
