The Debug Menu

This is the most indispensible menu in the game. To get to it, when in any level that isn't a 3D one, do the following:

1. Turn Ecco so he is facing to the left or right, up or down.

2. Hit left, right, up or down so he turns around.

3. In mid-turn, hit the START button to pause the game with Ecco facing toward or away from you.

4. Press C 8 times.

5. You should now see the below menu. To go to different levels, use left and right while the "stage" portion is selected to pick a level number, then press START to enter the level. Push up and down to pick different items in the list. You can modify numerous game parameters from here.

The 3D Stage Debug Menu

This Debug Menu shows up if you pause the game in 3D Stages. It is often corrupted as its tiles don't load correctly. It lets you view and set some variables, e.g. "Distance from Start" and "Time Decrement". There is quite a bit more detailed information about it on the 3D Stages Page.

Attract Mode / Demo Editor

Pressing B+Start while the Vortex Queen is falling in the Intro sequence will bring up the Password input screen. Hit START to skip past it, and you will get this menu!

You can record and play back demos here by editing the values and using A, B, C and START to select things. Experiment! Note that the demos are of course, not saved when the power is turned off on the real unit, since it has no means of storing this data. It can only be assumed the demos were read back by a debugger or similar to create the demos for the final game.

Here is what Ed Annunziata, Ecco's producer, had to say about the menu.
Its not fully functional there (I think) - the reason for it was to make in game story sequences and most important, the demo mode for the final game. Back then we still called it the "Attract Mode". I don't remember [if the code for it remains in the Final Version], I think it may be there since I remember we made the demos the very last minute. I don't remember the code though.
